Wave Power
Wavepower (Link on Website Homepage) is the Amateur Swimming Association Child Safeguarding Policy and Procedures manual - replacing all previous ASA Child Protection Policies and Procedures documents. All ASA affiliated clubs and organisations adopt and implement the Policies and Procedures contained in this manual.
CASC's Safeguarding Policy Statement is compiled in accordance with this ASA Manual.
Wavepower provides ASA Child Safeguarding Policy, mandatory requirements, practical information and good practice guidance in one place for use by club officers, club members, parents, children and all those who work with our young members so that everyone involved in our sport can play their part in safeguarding children and young people.
Chippenham ASC's copy of Wavepower is held by our Welfare Officer with an online copy available on 'The ASA' Website (Link on CASC Homepage).
Wavepower has been compiled by the ASA using ideas and feedback from the NSPCC Child Protection in Sport Unit, the ASA Youth Forum, Welfare Officers, Club Officers, parents, swimmers and numerous others.

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Checks

What is a DBS?

The Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) and the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) have merged to become the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). CRB checks are now called DBS checks.

A DBS check may be needed for:
- Certain jobs or voluntary work - eg working with children or in healthcare

For more information about DBS checks please access www.gov.uk

When is a DBS Required?
Anyone who is working for the club, either paid or voluntary, and is having contact with children or vulnerable adults as part of their role, 3 or more times in any given month, requires a DBS check. Officials should not require a DBS check as they should not be having any contact, but on occasions the club may expect more from them than their normal duties, and if they then fall into the requirements that require a check, then they will need to be checked.

Poolside
Chippenham ASC is committed to the welfare of children. For this reason a decision has been made that all officials who are on poolside will wear a club tee shirt to identify that they have a current DBS check. All other spectators will be asked to be seated in the designated public viewing area.

If a child requires their parent on poolside this should be discussed with their teacher/coach or a Team Manager. The parent should be seated on poolside allowing them to provide support to their child but away from other children and the pool.

Welfare Policy
Chippenham Amateur Swimming Club is committed to providing a club environment in which all children (persons under 18yrs) participating in its activities have a safe and positive experience. In order to achieve this, we adopt and implement the ASA Wavepower policy in full.
To comply with current legislation, permission to take photographs must be obtained from the pool operator and/or event organiser. Most swimming events have forms available where photographer information must be provided in advance of camera use. Please contact the Welfare Officer for further advice.

Swimmer Supervision
Parents remain responsible for the safety and behaviour of their own children when not in the pool, including the changing rooms and outside areas. The coaching and poolside staff are only responsible for swimmers in the pool during their allocated swimming session. Swimmers arriving early on poolside are not the responsibility of the coaching and poolside staff.

We advise parents/carers of young swimmers to remain on site throughout the swimming session. It is not desirable for parents to drop children off at the roadside and come back later to pick them up from the pavement outside the pool.

Health & Safety
Safety is paramount with any swimming organisation and at Chippenham ASC we take these issues very seriously.

There are a number of obligations we have as a club to ensure the safety of everyone concerned. These are:
• Compliance with ASA Safety Instructions;
• Compliance with Safety Instructions issued by the various pool operators;
• Compliance with statutory Health and Safety regulations and any Safety bye-laws.

Training sessions will not commence without the presence of a trained lifeguard and applies to all levels of competition.
Swimmers are not allowed onto poolside without the presence of at least one club coach or assistant. It is therefore important that parents / guardians do not allow their swimmers into the changing rooms earlier than 10 minutes before the start of a session.

Some club members have life-saving and first aid qualifications and we encourage others to improve their knowledge in this way.

Relevant Risk Assessments are shown on the Club > Reference Documents website page.

All members have a responsibility to act if they see an obvious breach of rules or something likely to cause an accident.

We need more licensed officials to run events and to complete behind the scenes roles. Why not start to train as an official? Its not as daunting as you think. Most of the training is done on pool side at a pace that suites you. Join a Judge 1 course to see what it is all about. Questions? Please ask Darren Hall or e-mail the club This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

If you are a parent of a CASC swimmer and have an hour or two to spare each week please contact a member of the committee either on poolside or via the 'contact us' link above as we are always looking for help from committed parents. Support is welcome both on poolside and behind the scenes with club administration / management functions.
